My most favorite pictorial environs to photograph is the desert. An exhibition titled, "Pharaoh's Realm" is the highlight of my visit to Egypt. Photographic prints are from Egypt's Western Desert (the Great Sand Sea, the Black Desert, the White Desert, etc.) and a selection of social landscapes from throughout the country.

Bahariayya Oasis

Bahariayya was the embarkation point for some of my best trips into the Western Desert. The images here, however, focus in and about town.

Siwa Oasis

I have heard and read stories of people visiting beautiful places before they became home to five-star resorts and were overrun by tour buses. Siwa Oasis is the first such place that I have ever visited.

Mersa Matruth Beaches

There is a lot to see in and around Cairo. Images are from the Pyramids of Giza, Wadi Digla, El Fayoum, Sakkara, the Sphinx of Memphis, etc. Look for the "Special Panorama View" link on the Pyramids of Giza photograph.

Abu Simbel

Abu Simbel is home of the great temple of Ramses II (1224 BC) dedicated to the gods Ra-Harakhty, Amun, and Ptah. The most amazing thing about this temple is that it was cut and rebuilt to save it from the waters of Nasser Lake.

Elephantine Island

Elephantine Island sits in the middle of the Nile at Aswan. The island is home to Nubian fellahin. The most distinctive feature of the homes, which are connected into a giant maze, is the doors.

The Old Cataract

Wow! This 5-star hotel was made famous as the setting for Agatha Cristie's "Murder in Cairo." What a setting! A very nice place to hang out...

Aswan

Aswan is the gateway to Africa and the land of Nubia. It is a prosperous marketplace at the crossroads of the ancient caravan routes.

The Temple of Karnak

The Temple of Karnac is a spectacular complex of sanctuaries, kiosks, pylons, and Obelisks, all dedicated to the Theban gods.

Luxor - The West Bank

On the West Bank of Luxor across the Nile are found the tombs of the pharaohs which were hidden into the hillsides in what is know today as the Vallery of the Kings, Hatshepsut, and the Valley of the Queens. On entering this area you pass the Colossi of Memnon.

Luxor sits on the Nile River near the site of ancient thebes. Among other ruins in the area is the Temple of Luxor.

The Sinai

The Sinai peninsula contains the highest mountains in Egypt and is surrounded on three sides by the Red Sea. These photos are typical of the terrain. Most of Egypt is an extreme desert. The Sinai is no exception it is just more hilly.

Dahab

Dahab is a Red Sea resort town on east coast of the Sinai. It has a reputation as a youth meca and caters to a youthful crowd.

The Hilton Resort is where I stayed. It has a fine beach protected by a semicircular sand bar. March is off season.
